Amateur and Professional Photography in the Garden

The Williamsburg Botanical Garden Welcomes You and Your Camera

There is no charge for either amateur or professional photographers, but please observe Garden Etiquette:

  • Photos are permitted throughout the WBG but specific areas cannot be reserved or blocked off for exclusive use.
  • Photographers, their assistants, and their clients must show courtesy to other visitors and volunteers who may be in the garden, and many not interfere with guests attending a private or Garden-wide event.
  • Photographers, assistants, and clients must remain in the paths. Walking in the garden beds and placing equipment such as tripods in the garden beds is strictly prohibited.
  • If you move a piece of garden furniture, such as a picnic table or bench, please return it to its original location.
  • Do not walk inside the Calcareous Ravine.
  • Do not sit or stand on the Calcareous Ravine stone wall.
  • Do not allow children to climb on the trellises and towers.
  • Do not pick or cut flowers, leaves, stems, twigs, or any part of any plant.
  • Do not move plant labels, plants, or any element of a garden display such as decorative pots and large garden rocks.
  • Do not block garden paths or gates with group set-ups or equipment.

Note: Garden volunteers are happy to answer gardening questions, but neither they nor park staff are available to assist or accompany photographers and their clients during a photography session.

It takes more than a green thumb to make this a great place for photography ...

It takes over 7,000 volunteer hours and more than $22,000 a year to make the Garden a beautiful place to take photos of flowers and butterflies, and to serve as a background for portrait sessions. The Garden does not receive money from the Parks Department or any other government agency.  Our funding comes entirely from donations, so we ask that professional photographers who use the Garden for paid portrait sessions to please contribute to the Garden's upkeep with a donation.
